About Course

The ability to communicate clearly in writing is a required skill for college success and many professional fields. Your grasp of written language (or lack thereof) can significantly impact not just your earning potential and likelihood of advancement but also other’s perception of your intelligence and capabilities. Being a skilled and proficient writer requires a solid understanding of both grammar AND how grammar and writing are connected – two concepts that are difficult for most people to simply “pick up” over time. Not only that, but understanding the grammar of your native language makes it much easier to learn the grammar of a foreign language. If you don’t know how your own language is broken down and what each part does, then how can you understand those parts in another language?

Taught by a multi-published author and professional editor, this year-long class (which meets Thursdays from 12:30-2:00) will take your teen’s grammar skills to the next level to help them create a foundation for strong writing and show them how they can apply that knowledge to their own compositions. No diagramming here – we’ll use a program that teaches these concepts in context as opposed to being isolated in a bunch of disconnected sentences.

Students should already have a beginner-level grasp of grammar (know the parts of speech, different forms of punctuation, what makes a complete sentence, etc.), although these concepts will be reviewed briefly for those who may be a bit rusty and need a reminder. If your student has had at least a year of formal grammar instruction at the upper elementary/early middle school level, then this class will be a great next step, but if you’re unsure if it would be a good fit, please reach out to me and I can help you determine if this course would be too difficult, too easy, or just right!

Grading will be based on participation and homework completion. This class counts as a one-year English credit.

This course is $850 for the year, with payment plans available. Get $100 off this class when you bundle it with any  of my other classes!
