About Course

Grades 7-12

In this course your student will learn resource management, employable skills, creative and critical thinking through the essential applications of skills for life.  They will learn to care well for their own lives now and through adulthood.

14 Week Fall Course

Will meet 1 elective credit for your high school student.

Course will consist of 14 modules with lessons, videos and hands on activities to be completed by the student delivered weekly.  Students will communicate with the instructor throughout the course and receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.  

Begins Week of September 5.  Ends week of December 12.

Cost :: $350

All supplies included in tuition.

No required textbook.

Students should allow 2-3 hours a week to complete class activities.

Course Content

Module 1 : Family Culture
In this module we will share and learn all about family culture. As we all know each family is very unique with it’s own combination of members, routines, traditions, dynamics and even quirks! The activities in this module will help you build on those things that already make your family unique and create an even stronger family culture.

Module 2 : Home Care

Module 3 : Home Maintenance
This module is all about keeping up with simple routine maintenance on your home. Just a few dollars and a few minutes can end of saving you thousands!

Module 4 : Sewing
In this module we will learn some basic sewing techniques!

Module 5 : Kitchen Tools
In this module we will go over some of the basic tools you will use in the kitchen for cooking. We will also cover types of knives and some basic knife skills.

Module 6 : Cooking Basics, part 1
In this module we will learn some basic kitchen skills to give you more confidence in food preparation!

Module 7 : Cooking Basics, part 2
In this module we will continue learning new skills for the kitchen!

Module 8 : Intro to Nutrition
In this module we will learn all about foods that supply our bodies with needed vitamins, minerals and energy-giving carbohydrates.

Module 9 : Nutrition (fats, oils, proteins)
In this module we will take a look at foods that give your body brain-healthy fats and proteins. We will take this idea one step further to the kitchen to learn how to use a whole chicken for the most nutrition benefits for the least amount of dollars.

Module 10 : Menu Planning & Table Setting
In this module we will learn about planning a menu that is not only budget friendly, but also nourishing.

Module 11 : Smart Grocery Shopping
In this module we will take a tour of the grocery store, learn and label reading and how to shop nutritionally and financially smart!

Module 12 : Basic Budgeting
In this module we will go over some basic budgeting tips!

Module 13 : Emergency & Minor First Aid
In this module we will learn some basic first aid to help you be prepared in any situation were an emergency may arise.

Module 14 : Communication
In this module we will learn some basic communication skills that you can apply in many areas of your life.

Module 15 :: Final Project
This project completes your Modern Day Home Ec Course.
